Heatwave Emergency Measures at Mahendra Chaudhary Zoological Park as Extensive Wildlife Protection Systems Activated
Mahendra Chaudhary Zoological Park at Chhatbir Zoo has activated extensive heatwave protection measures for wildlife, including cooling systems, agro net shading, water management, and emergency support infrastructure. The administration has ensured species-specific care for carnivores, herbivores, and birds to protect them from extreme summer conditions and maintain animal welfare standards.
Acting under the guidance and vision of Forest and Wildlife Preservation Minister Lal Chand Kataruchak, the zoo administration has introduced a wide range of cooling and protection measures across different animal enclosures to mitigate the impact of extreme temperatures.
Special arrangements have been made for carnivorous species, including tigers, leopards, lions, bears, and other animals, where desert coolers and air circulation fans have been installed inside all enclosures. The animal management cell remains continuously vigilant and operational to ensure that these enclosures remain cool and dry at all times. In addition, mesh screens have been fitted on all windows to maintain a mosquito-free environment.
Several enclosures and selected residential areas have been covered with 75 percent density agro nets to provide shade and significantly reduce ambient temperature levels. For emergency situations, water tankers and tractors have been kept on standby across the zoo premises to ensure uninterrupted water supply at all times.
For herbivorous animals, temporary shelters and huts constructed from reed, wood, and bamboo have been developed to protect them from intense heat and direct sunlight. Dedicated bathing facilities have been arranged for elephants, Manipur deer, swamp deer, and deer safari enclosures through mud pools filled with water. Concrete water pools across the zoo are being maintained with round-the-clock water supply. Additional sections of these areas have also been covered with 75 percent density agro nets to enhance cooling and comfort conditions.
For avian species, all bird enclosures have been carefully covered with 75 percent density agro nets and jute mats to shield them from hot winds and harsh sunlight. To further improve comfort levels, sprinkler shower systems have been installed in smaller bird cages, ensuring a controlled cooling environment for the birds.
The extensive implementation of these measures reflects a structured and continuous effort by the zoo administration to safeguard animal health during extreme climatic conditions and maintain stable living environments within the zoological facility.
